Have you ever thought to yourself, “If I only had this one thing (think more money, a better job, a successful business, a relationship or whatever would be relevant to you personally)…THEN I’d be happy”?

If so, you’re not alone. Most people think of happiness as the end result of achieving a goal or getting something they want. They believe that something outside of themselves will make them happy—but they have it backwards.

Happiness is an inner game.

If you’re not happy now, you won’t really be any happier once you get what you want. Sure, your mood might be lifted for a period of time, but before long, you’ll return to your baseline level of happiness. So ideally you want to learn how to manage your baseline level of happiness on a day-to-day basis. Below, you’ll find 4 tips for doing so.

1) Cultivate an “attitude of gratitude” and learn to appreciate all that you currently have in your life. We’re so often focused on what’s not going right instead of what is. Focusing on what you have to be thankful for can instantly shift you from a feeling of lack to a feeling of abundance. A great way to turn this a habit is to keep a gratitude journal where you record 5 things—big or small—that you’re thankful for each and every day.

2) Forgive. Holding onto grudges and anger will block you from true happiness. People think they’re somehow punishing the person they’re angry at, but in reality the only person they’re punishing is themselves. So do your best to forgive anyone who you feel has wronged or hurt you and try to be less critical of others going forward. Remember that most people are doing the best they know how to do. Most of the time the others around us are not trying to hurt our feelings. They’re usually just so focused on themselves and their own worries that they don’t realize how their actions are impacting you.

3) Stop complaining, blaming and whining. These activities accomplish nothing—except for draining your energy and making you feel like a victim. Starting now, vow to take 100% personal responsibility for everything in your life. If something is bothering you, be proactive and take action instead of merely complaining. If it’s something someone else has done, talk to them directly and make a request that they change their behavior, rather than gossiping about it to others.

Now don’t get me wrong. There will certainly still be times you’ll want to “vent” and this can be healthy—but try to limit it to just a few minutes. You can even go so far as to set a time limit and then ask the person you are venting with to cut you off when time’s up.

4) Get quiet. Most of us are so busy and scattered most of the time, that we’re out of touch with what’s really important to us and our true feelings. Give yourself space and time in your schedule to just…simply…be. Try meditation, taking long walks, getting massages—whatever brings you peace and helps you quiet your mind.

10 Quick Tips to Manage Information Overload

by Dana on January 24, 2015

information-overloadDo you feel like you’re constantly being flooded with more information than your brain can handle? Emails, texts, tweets, wall posts, your news feed, voicemails, snail mail, and instant, private & direct messages…If you’re feeling like it’s all too much, here are 10 quick tips to manage information overload.

1. Realize that you’re not going to be able to answer every message and consume every bit of helpful information available to you. Trust that if the message or information is important enough and you miss it the first time, it will come back around.

2. Get everything out of your head and into one central location. This could be on paper or on an electronic device  — whatever works best for you.

3. Limit the amount of new information you allow into your life. When it doubt, unsubscribe.

4. Turn off your notifications.

5. Begin each day working on your most important project.

6. Focus on one thing at a time — one main project to move your business forward, one task, one book that you’re reading, one training program that you’re working through, one skill that you’re trying to master, one habit you’re trying to build, etc.

7. Get clear on your most important priorities. Then ruthlessly prioritize what you have on your plate.

8. Make decisions more quickly. Don’t let analysis paralysis slow you down. Follow your gut more often.

9. Change your mindset around overwhelm. Listen to the words you use — both outwardly and inwardly. Do you always talk and think about how you’re overwhelmed, constantly distracted, stressed and have too much to do? Change your thoughts and words…and you’ll change your reality.

10. Give yourself some downtime. You don’t always have to be doing, doing, doing and absorbing new information. Sometimes you just have to take a break from it all and just LIVE.

An embarrassed woman after a computer errorDo you have website shame? In this week’s success strategy, I’m sharing a quick checklist of items to review and update to help you freshen up your website for the New Year.

  • Do you have a list-building freebie? If so, how is it converting? Could you update it to make it even more attractive and to move people toward a purchase?
  • Do you have clear calls to action? Do your visitors understand how they can take the next step with you?
  • Is it clear how your visitors can contact you — whether through a contact form or by phone/email?
  • Read through ALL of your content. Does everything make sense? Are there typos or grammatical errors? (You may also want to ask a friend to help you with this since you’re probably so close to the content.)
  • Has your messaging changed since you created your main content (e.g., your ideal client, how you work with people, your mission, etc.)?
  • Are you just talking about yourself in your content? Or do you pull your ideal client in by talking about the challenges they’re facing and their desires, and then provide them with reassurance that you can help?
  • Could you inject more of your personality into your content?
  • Are your photos/headshots current?
  • Is your branding consistent?
  • Are you using video (e.g., an introductory video on your home page or videos on your blog) to engage visitors?
  • Is your blog current?
  • Do you need to edit some of your past blog posts that might reference programs/products that you no longer sell?
  • Do you make it easy for your visitors to also connect with you on social media?
  • Click on all of your links. Are they going where you intended for them to go?
  • Are your “funnels” working properly? Re-opt in to your freebie and go through the process a new subscriber would. Does everything flow logically?
  • Are your testimonials up to date? Or do you have some clients you could reach out to so you can add their testimonials to your site?
  • Are your media mentions current?
  • Could you add photos of yourself in action at recent speaking engagements or events?
  • Have you backed up your website lately?
  • Do your plug-ins need to be updated?
  • Do you have Google Analytics on your site so you can review the data to see what’s working and where there’s room for improvement?
  • Is your website mobile-friendly?

Do you have any additional items to add to the list? Feel free to share in the comments below…

reviewI think it’s important to “complete” one year before moving on to the next. That’s why I always like to capture my lessons learned in my business over the past 12 months — and this year I’m adding in my biggest celebrations as well (thanks to some inspiration from the amazing Jenny Fenig in her year-end post!). Check out my top 5 celebrations & lessons learned from 2014…

What I’m celebrating…

1. New programs & products: This year I launched my first information products (my Entrepreneurship Unplugged CD & my Marketing Plan in a Box Digital Program) and expanded my program offerings with the release of my Attract More Clients NOW Quick Start Program. When I started my business, the idea of creating leverage really appealed to me and now I’m seeing how wonderful it is first-hand.

2. My clients are achieving GREAT results!!! As I’ve honed my ideal client profile over this last year in business, it’s paved the way for the absolute yummiest, perfect-fit clients to find their way to me – and as a result, I’m able to better support them in getting the results they’re looking for in their businesses.

Each one is purpose-driven, using their businesses as a vehicle to make a meaningful impact in the world. They’re brave, stepping through any fear they may have because they are so committed to their mission. They’re go-getters, taking consistent action to move themselves in the direction of their goals and bigger vision. And they’re just so darn loveable and cool!!! It’s my greatest pleasure to be a part of their journey…

3. Took lots of time off this summer to hang with the kids: When I started my business, one of my long-term goals was to take the summers off (I was inspired by one of my mentors, Alicia Forest, who makes this a practice in her business). Well, I’ve been gradually moving toward it – and while I’m not 100% there – I worked a very part-time schedule during the months of July & August to spend time with my kids. They’re only young once and it’s so important to me to cherish this time. We made some amazing memories and I’m looking forward to continuing to keep this time sacred going forward.

4. I held my first official live event: So technically, I held one live event before, but it was in my home – so taking things up a notch at the Hotel Providence was a big deal for me. And technically, the event took place right at the beginning of this year, but I did all the heavy lifting (marketed & prep) for it in 2014 – so I count it as one of my 2014 accomplishments.

I love the energy when you get really awesome, advancing people face-to-face, in a room together! I’ve always envisioned myself leading lots of live events in my business and now that I’ve taken this first step, I’m definitely inspired to do more. So be on the lookout for more opportunities to hang out in person this year…

5. Less pitching on my end…and more people reaching out to pitch me: When you’re first building your business, speaking and media are great ways to get visibility with your ideal clients. But because you’re a newbie, you really have to “pound the pavement,” so to speak, to get people to give you an opportunity. Well, this year I felt like I hit a tipping point where I saw all of my consistent action pay off – and I was proactively offered more speaking engagements (paid & unpaid) & media opportunities than I had been in the past. Looking forward to this trend continuing!!!

What I learned…

1. There will always be more items on your to-do list than you can accomplish in a day, but you must pull the plug the plug at some point. Trust me when I tell you that I have no shortage of ideas for what I COULD be doing in my business. And I wish I could execute on every one of them. But I can’t. So I prioritize. But even still, it’s a lot. While I did great with taking time off over the summer, I didn’t do a good job of unplugging each day. In fact, I pretty much worked every night after the kids went to bed. Well, that’s something I’m looking to cut out in 2015. How? At the end of 2014, I invested in even more administrative support in my business and have someone fantastic who’s taking care of a lot of the details for me so I can have more quality time with my family at night – and more sleep! (Thanks, Ashely!)

2. The way I start my morning sets the tone for the entire day. Last year, I took Eben Pagan’s Wake Up Productive Program and it made a huge impact on me. Eben has a great morning ritual he recommends to drastically increase the energy that you have all day – inevitably making you more productive. Well, I slipped a little on it over the summer…and again over the holidays…but I’m psyched to be in a book club where we’re reading The Miracle Morning this month by Hal Elrod. Similar concept to what Eben taught…and I’m back in the swing of things. And it feels great! Highly recommend both Eben’s program (which is launching soon; you can click here to get notice when registration opens) and Hal’s book.

3. Be 100% me. When I first launched my business, I dialed down my “woo-woo.” I was so used to maintaining a certain image in the Corporate world and I really wanted to be taken seriously in my business. But as I have grown my spiritual practices over the past couple of years, I could see clearly see how big of a difference they made in my ability to hit my business results. So I shared these practices with my clients – but not so much with the general public. But the more I start to sprinkle this element in with others, the more I’ve seen how hungry people are for the spiritual/mindset/personal growth side of things. So I’ll be turning up the volume on this in 2015.

4. Mindset is 90% of success – and maybe more. Yes, I teach great strategies and tactics for marketing, productivity and general business success. But if your mindset is off, all of the brilliant strategies and tactics in the world will not get you where you want to go. If you really want to experience great (and personally satisfying) results, you’re main job is to keep your vibration up and believe 100% that you can accomplish your goals.

5. I want to go deeper with my relationships. As I’ve been expanding my platform over the past couple of years, I’ve added A LOT of people into my circle – fellow advancing business owners, strategic partners, mentors, prospective clients and subscribers…generally lots of like-minded, interesting people. Well, this year, I want to build those relationships deeper…It’s not all about more, more, more. It’s about making an impact – and to do that, there must be real connection. Looking forward to connecting more with YOU in the coming year.

Watch out for the crabs!

by Dana on December 12, 2014

3353RedCrabThis week, I was listening to a video from Darren Hardy (if you’re not familiar with Darren, he’s the publisher of Success Magazine). He shared a great metaphor that I’d like to pass on to you. He talked about how crabs are trapped in cages by fisherman…The fisherman drop a large cage into the water. They put bait in it and there’s a hole at the top for the crabs to swim in. And they do. One after another wanders into the trap and eventually they eat up all the bait.

But here’s the interesting part…Even after all the bait is gone, they continue to pile in. Eventually, the trap fills up. Most just stay there, but occasionally one will try to to venture out and start to climb its way up the side of the cage. When the other crabs see this, they will immediately sabotage its effort by trying to pull it back down. And if that crab decides to attempt to get out again, the other crabs might break off its claws to prevent its escape. Other times, they might even kill it.

How to Set Your Prices

by Dana on November 21, 2014

pricingWhen I begin to work with new clients, I often find that they’re undercharging for their services. Is this an issue for you? What process did you use to set your fees? Did you just pull a number out of the air that felt good to you? Or did you look around to see what others in your field were charging – and then charge a similar amount…or even a little less? Well, in this week’s success strategy I’m sharing a step-by-step formula to follow to revisit your fee structure and ensure you’re earning what you should be. Read More

How Thinking Small Can Lead to Big Success

by Dana on November 14, 2014

Great DaneIn this week’s success strategy, I want to share something that happened during a coaching session with one of my private clients this week. I advised her to think small. For those of you who know me well, that might not sound like me…so let me explain.

This particular client launched her business about a year ago. From her first month in business to now, she has increased her sales by more than 1,000% (woo hoo, right?!?!?). When we were looking at setting goals a few months ago, we settled on crossing the six-figure mark. It was something that, based on her progress, felt like a stretch at that time, yet doable.

Recently, however, someone in her life had challenged that goal, believing that she had set the bar too low. He encouraged her to increase her goal to $500K. When we spoke, she asked if I agreed with him… Read More

Determination.stoneDo you ever feel like you have no control over when you feel motivated and when you don’t? Then, you’re gonna love this week’s success strategy. Motivation is the force that drives us to do things. But most of us are completely unaware of exactly what inspires us into action (hint: it’s different for everyone). Read More
